Film fans in the vicinity of Bristol this week would be well-advised to check out the 23rd edition of the UK’s leading short film and animation festival. Held from the 19th to the 24th September, the Encounters Film Festival promises to be a diverse showcase of new filmmaking talent from around the world, with more than 400 films and 60 events planned over the coming days.

Amidst an extensive and exciting schedule, one evening likely to stir discussion is the Tate-commissioned Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power on Wednesday the 20th September, which sees the screening of a series of original shorts from black filmmakers that explore the history and legacy of the Civil Rights movement. One for the animations enthusiasts, meanwhile, is the Desert Island Flicks talk from Michaël Dudok De Wit on Thursday the 21st, in which the Red Turtle director will discuss the films that have inspired his award-winning body of work.

Beyond these two events is a plethora of screenings and workshops to satisfy an expansive variety of tastes and interests, be it an exclusive masterclass from Despicable Me co-director Pierre Coffin, the chance to experience some of the latest developments in VR entertainment, or a selection of shorts exhibiting the new female talent emerging from Poland.

What’s more, with an admission price of just £5 for all film screenings, this is one festival that doesn’t have to be a blow to the wallet.
